India has 63 cities with a population of over a million and these are projected to increase to 100 over the next few years. Many of these cities are highly susceptible to flooding, mostly during the months from June to September during the monsoon with high rainfall intensities.
The presentation describes the measures undertaken for flood mitigation after the Mumbai flood with 944 mm of rain on 26 July 2005. This event also served as a wake-up call for urban flooding in India and paved the way for the formulation of the national urban flood disaster guidelines. Initiatives carried out in Pune and Mumbai for climate resilient cities – the “hot spot assessment” is also described.
