Thursday 11 Oct 2012Finding unstable equilibria and periodic orbits in experiments

Jan Sieber - University of Exeter

Harrison 203 14:00-15:00

I will show how one can use a combination of feedback control and Newton iterations to find unstable periodic orbits (or equilibria) in dynamical systems that are present only in the form of laboratory experiments. Using this approach one can track branches of equilibria or periodic orbits regardless of their stability (similar to what one does numerically with software such as AUTO). I will also discuss some simplifications of the original idea and show recent experimental results by David Barton (Bristol).
