I am interested in large-scale neural dynamics in healthy populations and those with psychiatric disorders. I investigate mathematical models of populations of excitable cells, such as neurones, that have multiple stable states, for example an excited state and a rest state. Using dynamical systems analysis and numerical simulations I characterise emergent transient dynamics between states in small motif networks. I apply theory to experimentally and clinically recorded data to gain insight into, for example, the onset of epilepsy seizures and the changes in temporal dynamics under the influence of anesthesia. I currently hold an MRC Skills Development Fellowship to identify patient-specific brain dynamics markers in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Cognitive Treatment Response.
I have BSc (Mathematics) and MA (Design) from the University of Leeds, UK. My PhD is in Applied Mathematics from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The focus of my thesis was the famously chaotic Lorenz system. I used state of the art computational techniques (two-point boundary values problems) to identify the bifurcation structure around the loss of the "foliation condition", after which the classical reduction of the system to a one-dimensional map doesn't fully capture the dynamics and much less is known about its behaviour. I joined the University of Exeter in 2016 as a Research Fellow in the EPSRC Centre for Predictive Modelling in Healthcare.
