Dr Frank Kwasniok joined the University of Exeter in March 2006 as a Lecturer in Applied Mathematics, having previously held research positions at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Bremerhaven, Germany), the University of Oldenburg (Germany), the London School of Economics, the Leibniz Institute for Atmospheric Physics (Kuehlungsborn, Germany) and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (Hamburg, Germany).
He is a member of the Exeter Climate Systems centre and the Centre for Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics.
Research interests
- stochastic subgrid-scale modelling
- stochastic low-order models of atmospheric low-frequency variability
- statistics, prediction and predictability of extreme weather events
- analysis and modelling of palaeoclimatic records using simple dynamical systems
- prediction of critical transitions from time series
- statistical post-processing of forecast ensembles
