ExIStA Reaches Its First Anniversary!

When we first set up ExIStA a year ago, we had no idea how many statisticians there were working in the South West and we’re amazed to have had over 250 members join so far.  To celebrate this achievement and to mark our first anniversary, we held a poster and networking session at the University of Exeter’s Innovation Centre on the afternoon of the 5th December.  Delegates from the University, Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, the Met Office and other private organisations from the region all came to share their statistical expertise and learn more about the statistical work undertaken in the region in the last year.

During the event, there was an Early Career poster competition with a £100 cash prize kindly donated by Select Statistics.  The standard of posters was very high, but after much deliberation the judges were pleased to award the prize to Dr Lisa Murray of the Met Office.  Lisa’s poster was entitled ‘An Ensemble Based Clear Air Turbulence Forecasting System’ and detailed the statistical work that Lisa has been undertaking to implement an operational forecasting system for turbulence.  By devising a statistical model that can accurately forecast turbulence, Lisa’s work can be used by the Met Office to reduce the current burden on their forecasters.  Well done Lisa!

Thank you to all our members for making 2012 a very successful year for ExIStA.  We’ve just submitted a funding application to the Bridging the Gaps  scheme to extend ExIStA’s funding until June 2013 and we’re currently putting together our programme of events for 2013.  If you have any ideas for workshops, seminars or any other potential ExIStA events for 2013 please do contact us at events@exista.org.
