Mrs Avalon Cory
Lecturer in Design and PBL
Avalon leads the Multi-Disciplinary Project on the new Engineering Programme. She has applied her experience of Gold Standard Project Based Learning (GSPBL) and design and innovation to co-create a technical brief with 21st century skills development threaded throughout. She is an experienced design educator and has design industry experience which she applies to her modules. She has worked with leading sustainable design brands across the UK, has been awarded prizes for innovation had her work presented internationally and established and ran a successful design micro-enterprise.
Avalon is a leader in digital technology for education and is committed to the creation and delivery of vibrant design and practical learning experiences through GSPBL. She is applying her previous experience to setting up the Engineering Maker Space where she plans to create a vibrant, collaborative community space to be used by students and the wider community to innovate and make.
Her areas of interest are centred around education research, GSPBL, improving student experience, digital technology for collaboration, Lego Serious Play, design, wearable technology and adaptive fabrics and the Circular Economy. Since joining Exeter, she has jointly published educational research and has presented her digital technology work at conferences and to CEMPS. She has become involved with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group where she has been leading discussions around Black Lives Matter which has led to the co-creation of a scholarship for Black Engineering students.
Her career aspirations are to help establish a framework for excellence in digital collaboration across the college, help co-create the new Engineering Undergraduate programme incorporating GSPBL across modules, to advance her education action research applying findings to improve student experience, create more success stories from the EDI group and to successfully establish an exciting, inclusive Maker Space for students and the community to collaborate. She has just taken on a new role as Assessment Officer where she is looking forward to collaborating with staff.
