Impact Fellow - Deep Digital Cornwall


Research expertise: Resource estimation, geostatistics, geometallurgy, sampling in the mine environment and mineral processing.

Current Project: Deep Ditigial Cornwall. The aim of the Deep Digital project is to create a world-leading cluster of research-active, highly innovative businesses in CIoS applying digital solutions to a wide range of business opportunities connected to the underground including mining, geothermal, civil engineering, environmental, surveying, water resources, planning and permitting, heritage, tourism.

Deep Digital Cornwall will give Cornwall and Isles of Scilly SMEs access to research skills, knowledge, data and facilities to carry out digital research and development of innovative products and services in cross-cutting sectors related to the underground environment and its connections to the surface. The project will create a new physical ‘Deep Digital Cornwall’ Hub on the Penryn University Campus. The hub will contain a visualisation suite and specialist computer hardware and software for use by researchers, including university specialists and local SME staff.

All of the research will centre on digital software and hardware. The research and innovation in this area is highly applicable to businesses in many sectors including digital services provision, mining, energy, civil engineering and construction, oil and gas, environmental consultancy, agriculture, tourism, creative and heritage.

The project will thus serve the rapidly growing digital software sector in CIoS and expand the CIoS digital economy by developing existing, as well as creating new, digital innovations in technical businesses from a wide range of sectors.

Past Projects:Sustainable Technologies for Calcined Industrial Minerals in Europe (STOICISM). A European Union research and innovation project. In partnership with Imerys Minerals Ltd and other European partners including Technische Universiteit Delft, the Netherlands, Aalto University, Finland and Université de Lorraine, France.

Integrated Modular Plant and Containerised Tools for Selective, Low-impact Mining of Small High-grade Deposits (IMPaCT).
