Dr. Alexander R. May MIET MInstP MIMA
University of Exeter Post-Doctoral Research Fellow on secondment to QinetiQ Farnborough
My main interests lie in the mathematical modelling of systems, whether that be in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or even linguistics! My most recent work was at WaveOptics Ltd where I studied the optical design of augmented reality (AR) glasses and the IT Innovation Centre where I worked on Natural Language Processing (NLP).
I completed a PhD in Optoelectronics/Photonics (Physics) having expanded my expertise into the field of Telecommunications by taking an MSc in Communication Systems Engineering at the University of Portsmouth. Before this, I spent two and a half years working as a researcher in the Rolls-Royce funded TFSUTC at the University of Surrey in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics.
While my undergraduate training is in the field of mathematics, I have worked in a variety of fields in the past, including spending time in the Merchant Navy with P&O Nedlloyd, and in the security industry in a variety of roles - a true generalist!
My present focus is on developing computational models for electromagnetic scattering processes - with a particular emphasis on surface scatter (e.g. oceans, materials), and the effect of atmospheric processes on imaging. This is being combined with additional laboratory training and work at QinetiQ to develop physical intuition behind these processes.
