Matthew started work in the Department of Computer Science in December 2000, after graduating from Exeter University in 1998. He achieved a BSc in Management Science and Information Technology from what was then the MSOR department in the School of Mathematics.
His first job was in a computer support role working for an international distribution and manufacturing company called Stovax based in Exeter. Their products include gas, solid fuel, oil and woodburning fires and stoves. His main role at Stovax was network administration, but also solving software and hardware problems, and providing technical reports on sales, bills of material and personnel. He was also involved in maintaining the websites for Gazco and Original Style which together make up the Stovax Group.
Matthew is now part of the Computer Support team in the College. His tasks include:
- Windows operating system software and application support to all staff, postgraduates and undergraduates
- Managing and developing the website in his role as Webmaster
- Providing support for research and teaching
- Administering the undergraduate web server which provides MySQL and PHP functionality to students and staff; and the flexlm license server
- Maintaining the network infrastructure within the Harrison Building
Outside of employment his main interest is in church bell ringing. He is the tower captain at St Mark's Church, the Ringing Master at Exeter Cathedral, is a member of The Guild of Devonshire Ringers and is the Secretary for the student ringing society The Exeter Colleges Guild.
