Tuesday 29 May 2012AG Dynamics Seminar: Feedback control of patterns arising in equivariant Hopf bifurcation problems

Hopf bifurcations with symmetry arise naturally in pattern-forming problems posed on spatially periodic domains. These equivariant Hopf bifurcations generically result in multiple solution branches, each with a different symmetry. We exploit the symmetries of these solutions to design non-invasive feedback controls that can select and stabilize the targeted solution branch, in the event that it bifurcates unstably. In both the subcritical case, and the supercritical case where the targeted orbit has a spatio-temporal symmetry, a time-delay is necessary for stabilisation.
