Thursday 17 Nov 2011Inspiring Science - Cellulose: Sustainable and Renewable Material for Many Applications

Professor Steven Eichhorn - Chair of Materials Science, College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Harrison Building, Room 004 17:45-19:00

The talk will cover the use of cellulose as a sustainable and renewable source for use in composites, packaging, energy and biomedical applications. The talk will discuss recent developments and will be placed in context of world issues surrounding diminishing oil resources and energy. In addition to this, some of the speaker's own research will be highlighted with a view to future work planned at Exeter.
Professor Steve Eichhorn has recently joined Exeter from the University of Manchester. He originally trained as a physicist, but works closely with engineers, biologists, physicists and chemists. His research focuses on the mechanical properties and interfaces in natural and sustainable materials, particularly cellulosics, but has also worked on seashells and fingernails. He is particularly interested in applying principles from biological structures in engineering applications - or biomimetics - for a variety of applications including composites, smart packaging, energy harvesting and biofunctional materials.
