Tuesday 15 Nov 2011Maths seminar - Lagrangian dynamics and the incorporation of data into ocean models

Christopher K. R. T. Jones - University of North Carolina

St John's Room, Kay Labs 16:00-17:00

An understanding of Lagrangian dynamics in the ocean has helped delineate specific features, such as eddies and currents, and it has also served to expose fluid pathways and explain the spreading of such tracers as phytoplankton and oil. The question addressed here is whether it can serve to guide observational strategies. The key vehicle is a theory of Lagrangian data assimilation through which it can be seen how to most effectively incorporate data into models and thus give a framework for assessing the quality of the data.
