Thursday 22 Sep 2011Supporting Engineering Education

Fiona Lamb - Loughborough University

Poldhu Room, Kay Building (Video Link to CSM DuMaurier B) 09:30-11:00

This seminar will provide an outline of current issues in engineering education, using the 2010 Royal Academy of Engineering report 'Engineering graduates for industry' as a starting point, but also considering other recent developments such as the introduction of fees.
Radical changes made in the provision of engineering education elsewhere (such as at Liverpool, Coventry and UCL) will be briefly described. This approach will be then compared to the benefits of incremental change (examples include Loughborough, Imperial, Southampton).

The Loughborough approach to supporting engineering education will then be described in more detail.
It will end with a summary of national support and funding opportunities available, including the Higher Education Academy, National HE STEM programme and Royal Academy of Engineering schemes.

Dr Fiona Lamb graduated from Oxford University in 1994 with a degree in Engineering Science, and then worked in Sydney, Australia for a firm of consulting engineers. She joined Loughborough University in 1996, initially working within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 1997 she setup, and became Manager of, the Faculty of Engineering Teaching and Learning Support Centre (renamed the Engineering Education Centre). In 1999, she successfully bid for the LTSN Engineering Centre (now the Engineering Subject Centre) and became its Manager in 2000 and Associate Director in 2003. On returning from maternity leave in 2005, she joined the engCETL as its part-time Associate Director. Her role within the engCETL is to lead the strategic activities of the Centre. This involves development of operational and strategic plans, marketing the engCETL externally, initiating and developing new ideas and activities, development of protocols, a research ethos and evaluation strategy, developing ideas for income generation and representing the Centre internally and externally.
