Friday 25 Jul 2008Star formation in the backyard of the closest super-massive black hole

Dr Sergei Nayakshin - University of Leicester

Physics, 4th Floor interaction area 12:00-13:00

The central parsec of our Galaxy is dominated by the super-massive blackhole called Sgr A* that is currently dormant. Interestingly, there is about a hundred early type stars in the region, some as close as thousands AU to Sgr A*, moving with velocities up to percents of speed of light. I will review observations of these enigmatic stars, theories and simulations of their formation. An attempt to link and compare star formation process in this environment to that of the "normal" mode elsewhere in the Galaxy will be made.
