Tuesday 20 Oct 2020Dynamics Seminar: Shaping neural circuits by patterned activity

Julijana Gjorgjieva - MPI-Brain/TU Munich

Zoom 13:30-14:30

The emergence of flexible and stable neural circuits requires the coordination of multiple mechanisms acting at the single neuron and network level. Activity-dependent plasticity mechanisms during development refine initially imprecise connectivity into functional circuits that can execute diverse tasks in adulthood. I will first present a computational framework for how specific patterns of neural activity drive non-random connectivity refinements at the synaptic and circuit level. Using experimental data, I will show how activity patterns in the visual cortex are modified following a significant sensory perturbation that affects the correlation structure of sensory inputs, and present theoretical work that links cellular and synaptic changes to network activity patterns.
