Thursday 07 Nov 2019How do Planets Generate Their Magnetic Fields?

Prof. Peter Davidson - University of Cambridge

Harrison 101 14:30-16:30

Despite half a century of concerted effort, there is still much we do not understand about how planets maintain their magnetic fields. Numerical simulations and laboratory experiments cannot access the regimes expected in planetary interiors, and as a result precise dynamo mechanisms remain elusive. There is even disagreement over what should be the basic building blocks of a zero-order cartoon for planetary dynamos. We offer one possible cartoon here, motivated by studies of rapidly-rotating turbulence.
