Thursday 22 Apr 2010: The European Extremely Large Telescope
Dr Chris Evans - UK Astronomy Technology Centre
Physics, 4th Floor interaction area 15:30-16:30
Europe is in the advanced planning stages of its flagship optical-infrared facility, the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). With a primary aperture in excess of 40-metres, its sensitivity and angular resolution will revolutionise our observational capability over all distance scales - from studies of nearby exo-planets, right out to the highest redshift galaxies. The UK is playing a leading role in many aspects of the E-ELT project. I will give an overview of the E-ELT science case and updates on the telescope design and instrumentation studies.
