Thursday 02 Nov 2017Thin sets are (sometimes) thin

Professor Tim Browning - University of Bristol

H103 14:30-16:30

This talk will mainly be about cubic and quadratic Diophantine equations. When studying rational solutions to Diophantine equations the presence of so-called "thin" subsets (as introduced to the subject by Serre) can cause unexpected problems. I will discuss the notion of thin sets, together with situations where we can use sieve methods to demonstrate that their role is negligible.
