Thursday 20 Oct 2016: From Physics to….. ologies, Where did it all go wrong???
Prof. Hugh J. Byrne - FOCAS Research Institute, Dublin Institute of Technology
Streatham Court C 15:30-16:30
From a background in laser physics and materials spectroscopy, the presentation will map the evolution of research activities into explorations of the use of vibrational spectroscopy for biomedical analysis and disease diagnostics, as well as the interaction of nanomaterials with biological cells in vitro, as a basis for Nanotoxicology and Nanomedicine. In both cases, the importance of a fundamental understanding of the physics and materials science of the interactions is highlighted. Examples of scattering artefacts in biospectroscopy and a rate equation approach to cellular uptake of and response to nanoparticles are discussed.
