The Herschel Space Observatory was suceessfully launched in May 2009, and has already proved remarkable new insights of objects at low and high redshift in the little-explored far-infrared region of the EM spectrum. In this talk, I will provide some background on the Herschel mission and its progress to date and will focus on the Science Demonstration phase results from the Herschel SAG2 consortium, consisting of three main programs focussed upon the local universe: the Very Nearby Galaxy survey, the Herschel Galaxy Reference Survery and the Dwarf Galaxy Survey.
