Optical spectroscopy and imaging are invaluable analytical means for application in Biomedical Sciences. Techniques based on infrared absorption or Raman scattering provide chemical information - namely composition and structure - of cells and tissues at a molecular level. We are currently working on developing a new system which will enable us to gain complementary biomechanical information from materials such as protein fibres and tissue. It is a non-invasive label-free approach for mechanical imaging at high spatial resolution and with chemical specificity. This can help elucidating the mechanisms which underlie tissue function, alteration and disease.
