We say an extension of local fields satisfies the Valuation Criterion if t here is an integer $c$ such that any element of valuation $c$ generates a normal basis. I will survey existing results on the Valuation Criterion, and discuss a joint result with Lara Thomas about how the Valuation Criterion relates to ramification numbers in the case of cyclic Kummer extensions
