Friday 06 Dec 2013Numerical and Experimental Study on Urban Inundation

Professor Kenji Kawaike - Kyoto University

Harrison room 170 15:00-16:00

In Asian countries, urban flooding due to torrential rainfall is a very serious problem, and also in Japan urban inundations and flood disasters happen in some places every year. The seminar will comprise a short introduction of urban inundations in Japan, numerical modelling of urban catchment area for pluvial inundation and its validation by means of flume experiments.

Bio: Dr. Kawaike is an Associate Professor of Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, Japan. That institute has a huge experimental laboratory and he is its vice manager since 2006. He has been engaged in urban flooding study for more than 15 years, trying to develop integrated numerical model of a river basin scale with flood management facilities.
