Thursday 07 Mar 2013: Towards a new Scheme for Parametrization of Convection in an Atmospheric Dispersion Model

Atmospheric convection is responsible for transport and mixing of air parcels resulting into a large exchange of heat and energy above the boundary layer. Within large-scale models of the atmosphere, the horizontal length scale on which the convection exists is below the resolution used and therefore convection must be parametrized.
In this talk I am going to illustrate the challenges of improving the current parametrization scheme used by the Met Office Atmospheric Dispersion Model (NAME III). I will also propose a 1D idealized model of vertical convective transport and I will discuss limitations and further improvements.
