Thursday 25 Oct 2012Hopf-Galois structures: non-abelian, nilpotent and soluble

A Galois field extension may admit several Hopf-Galois structures. Associated to each is its "type", a group which has the same order as the Galois group but need not be isomorphic to it. I will talk about recent joint work with Lindsay Childs, showing that many abelian extensions of fields admit Hopf-Galois structures. of non-abelian type. I will also outline some work in progress giving general connections between the Galois group and the type.
