European MSc in Minerals Engineering (EMEC)

Location

This programme is taught at the Cornwall Campus plus three European universities.

Programme overview

This MSc is designed to provide advanced specialised training for engineering graduates, leading to excellent employment opportunities in the primary and secondary materials industry.

Taught modules are presented over two semesters at four different universities, of which one is Exeter and three are in mainland Europe.

There are five places available, each of which is sponsored by a major mining company.

The mining industry provides a strong demand for graduates who have expertise in the separation and recovery of minerals and metals from their ores. The internationally-acclaimed European MSc programme in Minerals Engineering provides this expertise, giving graduates excellent career opportunities both in the UK and overseas. During the course, students are presented with the opportunity to attend specialist courses and experience the culture at four different EU universities: University of Exeter, Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), Helsinki University of Technology (Finland) and RWTH Aachen (Germany). While abroad, the cost of accomodation is covered by sponsors from the mining industry and Erasmus travel grants are arranged for UK/EU students. Successful applicants to this course may also receive additional funding.

The MSc is suitable for applicants who have recently obtained (or will obtain) a first degree in engineering or a related science discipline. The MSc can be completed in one year, with 6 months of studying abroad, 2 months of taught programme in Cornwall and a 4-month research project leading to a dissertation. While abroad, field visits to minerals engineering plants are used to supplement the taught material.

The course provides an intensive learning experience with modules covering a broad of spectrum of specialisms of the four participating universities. Depending on the university style, modules are presented in a sequential short-course format or in a parallel format. Interaction with the mining and extractive industries is promoted throughout the course through excursions and meetings.
