Mathematics student Rachel on 'Why choose Maths?'
Book your place at our June 2012 Open Day
The next Open Day at the Streatham campus in Exeter will take place on Tuesday 12th June. Book your place now.
At Exeter we are strongly motivated by the application of Mathematics. It is an exceptionally powerful tool that is an essential part of life in the real world. There is a strong link between what we teach and what we research.
Strong links across industries provide real examples of situations to be solved logically. We have 3 Met Office professors within climate mathematics and good links with Biosciences and Physics; at Exeter you have the flexibility to choose.
Mathematics degrees give a firm foundation in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics/Optimisation. In the first and second years there are compulsory modules in all these areas, together with some optional modules. A system of electives in Years 2 and 3 allows you to take modules in other subjects at the University, for example in Business, Modern Languages or Psychology.
Choosing Mathematics at Exeter gives you:
- The flexibility and freedom to choose a wide range of optional modules - enabling you to sample various disciplines and specialise if desired.
- Research led teaching - all academic staff are active, internationally recognised researchers across a wide range of mathematical topics.
- First-class equipment and excellent facilities - a £2.8 million investment including a major expansion of computer facilities and completely refitted lecture theatres.
- Staff committed to helping you make the best mathematics career choices - you'll be guided at every step to help you choose the best mathematics option for you.
This programme will meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation, awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), when it is followed by subsequent training and experience in employment to obtain equivalent competencies to those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for taught masters degrees.

My time with HSBC was a steep learning curve, but I can honestly say that it was an invaluable experience.
I spent 10 weeks within the Global Marketing Division, based in Canary Wharf. I was tasked with helping out on a number of the daily activities that take place there, although I would say my main focus was learning exactly what is involved in being part of the team.
It was high pressured, and although you are an intern it is still an intense environment, but that just encouraged you to try and take as much responsibility as possible for the tasks that you were set.
One of the best bits of advice that I received was that people were still learning new things, even after 25 years there. There was a lot to take on board, but you never felt that you were on your own.
I have been fortunate enough to be offered a place with HSBC at the end of my studies, through this internship. It means I can now concentrate on my studies, rather than worry about what will happen after.
This was an invaluable experience for me, and so great to have the responsibility that I did. I would recommend the CANDI scheme to anyone.

My placement with the pricing and underwriting division of RBS Insurance gave me the opportunity to use the practical theory I have been taught during my Maths course.
I spent eight weeks in London, and was given a project to carry out during my time which looked at climate change and the direct effect it has on insurance. I worked with a number of different stakeholders including the Met Office, before presenting my findings at the end of my placement.
It was a great experience for me, and the people I met there were lovely – we still keep in touch. But best of all it gave me the opportunity to really work hard and express myself, which I was determined to take with both hands.
I really enjoyed myself, and found it to be varied and really interesting. I have also been fortunate enough to be chosen as one of two interns to go back after my studies finish.
I can’t recommend the CANDI experience enough. You have to make sure that you really make the most of your opportunity and work hard, but I would do it again in an instant.
