This programme will develop your core mathematical skills and apply them to important contemporary challenges. Mathematics and the Environment is interpreted broadly. It is inspired by the natural environment and motivated by global challenges, such as environmental change, energy security and wildlife disease.
Planet Earth is facing many simultaneous threats. Impacts of climate change, populations under pressure, sustainable energy, food security, globalisation and human health present numerous and multifaceted challenges for scientists, governments and policymakers. Mathematics is essential for understanding and finding answers to these problems and as such Mathematics can make a difference. With your expertise in mathematics and statistics you can be part of the solution by helping to tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems.
Learning is guided by finding solutions to a diverse range of problems and enriched with cutting edge mathematical research in renewable technologies, ecology, society and human health. Your studies will benefit from the personalised support and flexibility built into the programme, and from the state of the art facilities on our modern campus.
Our students have the opportunity to take mathematics education out of the classroom through overseas field courses, local field trips with expert guides, and projects collaborating with local, national and international organisations and businesses. You will also be encouraged to gain valuable professional experience through local, national or international summer placements.

UNESCO Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013
The BSc Mathematics and the Environment programme embodies the spirit of the UNESCO Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE) 2013 initiative. It explores not just the fundamentals of mathematics but also how mathematics can be used to solve a diverse range of scientific, technological and societal problems. The MPE initiative involves more than 100 scientific societies, universities, research institutes, and organizations all over the world which have banded together to dedicate 2013 as a special year for the Mathematics of Planet Earth.
