I am reading towards a PhD in forecast verification under Dr Chris Ferro and Professor David Stephenson.
Forecasts are common, the more familiar forecasts being those issued by meterological offices and economic bodies. Many events have competing forecasts. In this case the forecast that is chosen will depend on the reputation of the forecaster. Implicit in this latter statement is the idea that the performance of a forecaster can be adequately measured. Forecast verification is a branch of probability theory and statistics that considers optimal techniques for assessing forecaster success.
