College students Roger, Holly and James discuss the transition from school to university study.

Undergraduate student life

The department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers undergraduate students the opportunity to join an exciting and contemporary discipline. We pride ourselves on providing a challenging academic experience enhanced by an excellent learning environment with high levels of Overall Satisfaction in Mathematics and Computer Science in the National Student Survey (2011).

Student societies

We have a lively community of Mathematics and Computer Science students who run the Maths society (Mathsoc) on the Streatham campus. Social meetings and events are organised throughout the academic year and provide excellent opportunities for getting to know your fellow students outside of academic work time and most importantly having fun! ITMB students in particular are encouraged to join the IT and Business Management society, allowing for fellow ITMB students to get to know one another in a relaxed setting.

Social facilities

All undergraduates have unlimited access to social and library areas on campus as well as common rooms within each academic building. In particular, undergraduate students have access to the Learning Resource Centre in the Harrison building; a great location for group work.  There is also communal seating area in the foyer which is ideal for meeting and working with fellow students.

Your voice as a student

Our academics and students develop strong working relationships over the course of a degree programme, a factor we feel is important to your success.

SSLC: Student-Staff Liaison Committees

Student-Staff Liaison Committees (SSLCs) are student-run forums for suggestions and feedback to and from the College staff. SSLC's are fairly informal committees, chaired by one of the student representatives, which meets about once a term to discuss a wide range of issues and developments.

SSLCs include representatives from each year and each programme. Their job is to provide a point of contact for the students on their programmes.

MACE: Module and course evaluation

Feedback from students is requested for every module. Module leaders receive this feedback and are required to respond to the scores and comments received via the Annual Module Review process. The responses are subsequently shared with students.

University life and student support

The University provides many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of your studies. The Students’ Guild runs clubs and societies across a whole range of activities and interests and has one of the most advanced student media networks in the country. Our sports facilities are also amongst the best in the country. We aim to make sure our students leave us with memories of their time at university that they will treasure, and benefit from, for a long time after they graduate.

You can find out more about what life is like for students on the Streatham campus and what support is available for you on the student life pages of the Undergraduate Study website. The website also includes student profiles and films, which give a flavour of life on campus.

The friendliness of the staff during the open day and the beautiful campus instantly attracted me to the University. When you add the excellent reputation to the above, there is no point looking beyond for another University and I decided to pursue my degree in Exeter.

Student life is amazing and being an Exeter undergraduate, you get so many opportunities to get involved in be it in SSLC, societies or the different sports clubs.

I hope to achieve 2:1 and go on to be a secondary Maths teacher. Without this programme, I would not have had the ability to become a teacher and now I also have a chance to teach French.

University has given me amazing experiences through the opportunities on campus and abroad. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and all these wonderful moments will be fond memories when I look back.

BSc Mathematics and French

My tutor is excellent as he's always readily available to help me no matter what. Being part of the SSLC has helped me understand the behind the scenes aspect of the course structure, and also how we can continue to improve it further still. The Help Sessions set up have been absolutely excellent, and must continue through to next year.

Exeter Mathematics Undergraduate

I have joined several societies which have provided me with extra skills including working with others.  My time at university has improved my overall time management so now I can fit in my extra curricular activities and socialising around my studies.

Learning at Exeter is a great experience; not only in terms of the world class research, but also the wonderful campus environment and friendly people. The university is also located in one of the most beautiful regions of Britain.
