The College has recently completed the major expansion and upgrading of undergraduate computer facilities

The Learning Resource Centre in the Harrison building offers flexible working space for all College students.

Facilities

The College has benefited from a £3 million investment in new academic and student facilities including:

  • completely refitted lecture theatres and teaching spaces with the very latest presentation and teaching equipment;
  • major expansion and upgrading of undergraduate computer facilities with a flexible teaching unit comprising 100 workstations;
  • wireless networking in most areas;
  • a new Learning Resource Centre, including meeting rooms for group project work;

The College has a range of purpose-built computer rooms and lecture facilities fitted with the latest audio-visual equipment. There is an ongoing programme of investment in new computers and software. The computers used for undergraduate teaching include a range of machines running either Windows or Linux. On these computers you can access specialist software, work on program development using Java and C++, undertake multimedia work or simply access the network for email or internet browsing. There are also other more specialised computing facilities within the College, such as clusters that support high performance computer intensive research.

The College and IT Services also provide a Helpdesk facility and a laptop surgery, together with general computing surgeries run by postgraduate students, to help you with any difficulties and provide access to manuals and technical publications. You will have access to computing laboratories 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and most University accommodation has facilities allowing high-speed computer network access from your room.

I found the surgeries to be an absolute life saver; having 4th year students to bounce ideas off was really helpful - not just for getting to the answer, but also for reinforcing the methods needed to get there. They also help to make 1st years feel more included in the maths department, as we can build connections with students outside of our lectures.

The computer and presentation rooms in the Harrison building are excellent in terms of both quality and availability and have greatly assisted in my studies.
