Because of the interplay between Mathematics and Physics we focus on combining these disciplines believing that they co-exist and complement each other and that this is the most fulfilling way to study the subject area. The Physics component is a coherent, self-contained programme in degree-level Physics.
Exeter is an exciting place to study Mathematics and Physics. Recently, £8.2 million has been invested in ultra fast lasers, nano-fabrication, bio-imaging, lecture theatres, computing facilities and also our own astronomical observatory. In addition to this is the £1 million supercomputer located in the Physics Building, the 6th most powerful in a UK university.
Here at Exeter we are constantly pushing the boundaries of science. You will be taught by internationally recognised researchers, providing you with research led teaching within a multidiciplinary environment.
Choosing Mathematics and Physics at Exeter gives you:
- The flexibility and freedom to choose a wide range of optional modules - enabling you to sample various disciplines and specialise if desired.
- Research led teaching - all academic staff are active, internationally recognised researchers across a wide range of mathematical topics.
- First-class equipment and excellent facilities - including an £8.2 million investment including a major expansion of computer facilities and completely refitted lecture theatres.
- Staff committed to helping you make the best mathematics career choices - you'll be guided at every step to help you choose the best mathematics option for you.

There is a great community feel in my halls, I have found many good friends, everyone is friendly. The work is good, and challenging, but that's part of the enjoyment of the course.
There are so many societies available: I am in the Scholars orchestra a music scholarship programme that gave me lessons. I joined the Folk Society when I started and now I am the new president. The society has a band, Pigasus; we make money through various gigs. I attend a conducting group lesson which is followed by conducting a small wind group. I am learning ballroom dancing through the dance society which is good fun.I am also part of the Sound Engineering Society, everything from semi-acoustic bands to large events. I was the Technical Manager for the Intervarsity Folk Dance Festival which had a 25k budget and over 1000 attendees.
The university campus is very good and I particularly like the specialism within each department.

The University of Exeter is probably the most up-and-coming research University in the UK; the dynamics research is absolutely exceptional. My programme attempts to provide a complete overview and understanding of the physical processes to its students, whilst at the same time giving opportunities to study another field such as Mathematics. I don’t like to confine the limits of my achievements and the University is really helping me to develop; the sky truly is the limit!
When I studied in Belarus I always favoured Humanities and Life Sciences, but my preference shifted to Physical Sciences towards the end of my schooling. I initially came to England to learn English on the INTO University of Exeter course, but my plans soon changed after I arrived here.
My attraction to Mathematics & Physics, the reputation of the College, a chance to study in England and the scholarship that I received from the University made me choose to stay here. I have nothing to complain about Exeter - it’s a wonderful place to live and study. The Physics School made a great impression when I first arrived and the Professors are wonderful. The student life is bright and I would encourage more international students to come to Exeter to help develop the atmosphere of a truly international community within beautiful surroundings.
