Research Interests
Dr Young is a mechanical engineer whose research interests lie in the following areas:
- Biomechanics
- Numerical modelling of head injury mechanisms and design and optimization of injury mitigating structures/environments (helmets, dashboards etc..).
- Numerical and experimental modelling of orthopaedic implants (hip and shoulder) under both static and dynamic loading conditions.
- Solid Mechanics
- Elasticity theory: Novel thin, moderately thick and three dimensional shell theories are being developed.
- Experimental and numerical analysis of the response of composite structures to impact.
- Image Analysis
- Development of algorithms for medical image segmentation: Software is currently being developed to automate the construction of three dimensional finite element models based on medical imaging datasets (MRI and CT scans).
