Fiona Gleed is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over 30 years’ experience in civil engineering design practice and education. She is an active member of the Institution of Structural Engineers and has served as Chair of the Western Counties Regional Group (2015) and as a member of various other committees of this international institution.
Fiona’s career started as a school leaver with Arup and she joined their Bristol office as a graduate engineer. Over a ten year period, she worked on a wide variety of projects, including gas pipeline diversions for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and superstructure design for the Synthetic Chemistry building at University of Bristol. After qualifying as a Chartered Engineer she took parental leave before returning to engineering as a lecturer at University of the West of England (UWE) where she completed her PG certificate in HE teaching and learning. Her experience of teaching at UWE, across a range of built environment courses and as programme leader for FdSc/BSc Civil Engineering, has led to a particular interest in part-time and work based learning.
Fiona's current role at University of Exeter includes lecturing in Engineering Design and Structural Materials on the Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Programme, supervising students for individual project and MSc dissertation, and supporting colleagues with progression to membership of Professional Engineering Institutions.
