An example of an Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) after using computational simulations in combination with image based modelling techniques.

Research interests

Our research interests centre on how to develop, produce, and exploit the commercial benefits of new materials, innovative new products and high value, low-carbon processes.

Materials research concerns the development and characterisation of novel materials and their applications, these include; materials with unusual properties such as negative Poisson’s Ratio and negative thermal expansion, light weight multifunctional materials, structures for novel transport applications such as smart wings, vibration damping, next generation composites and biomaterials.

Manufacturing research includes new manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing as well as next generation manufacturing strategies and new ways of designing, optimising and operating complex manufacturing systems and supply chains.
