Xiaojie Zhou - Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight

We get to know more about Postgraduate Researcher Xiaojie Zhou in this month's 'Water they up to: CWS in the Spotlight' feature.

What is your research about?

My research aims to enhance water resilience through improved insight into household water consumption patterns and thus support the development of long/short-term demand forecasting. Specifically, machine learning methods are applied to disaggregate household water consumption into micro-components (i.e. water use activities such as showering, dishwashing and toilet flushing) for consumption pattern analysis.

What is the most exciting part about your research?

I find it exciting using machine learning methods for real-world data analysis and thus gaining better knowledge of them during the process. Also, it is interesting to see and find out the reasons behind some unexpected outcomes (you never know what your data will tell you!)

When thinking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?

That will always be the West Lake in China. The West Lake is a quite famous sightseeing spot in my hometown and where I spent a lot of my time during my childhood, particularly going for walks with my family after dinner time.

Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?

Titanic. This movie left a deep impression on me when I first watched it with my family during my primary school summer holidays. I will never forget the freezing cold sea water that took away so many lives in the movie and how fragile life is when facing the power of nature.
