19th International Conference of the Europe-INBO

How digital solutions can contribute to the implementation of EU water policies

The 19th International Conference of the Europe-INBO was held at the invitation of the Energy and Water Agency (EWA) of Malta from 8-10th December 2021. Organisations, administrations and other stakeholders interested in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) at basin level were invited to participate in the event and share their experiences on the implementation of European water directives.

Dr Kate Baker presented in the session entitled ‘The role of the socio-political engagement to implement digital solutions’. Kate discussed the case study of the Great Torrington Water Forum explaining how the forum started and giving details of their activities to date which include creating and delivering a water awareness campaign. Kate then facilitated two workshops, one was on the topic of ‘how to use local water forums in River basin management plan (RBMP) development and implementation’ and the second topic was aimed at gathering their recommendations to facilitate the involvement of basins actors with digital solutions.

It is planned that River Basin Organisation (INBO), with the support of OIEau, will organise 6 workshops (at year 3) linked to events driven by its regional branches (Europe, Africa, Mediterranean, South America, North America, Central Asia) to showcase the benefits of Fiware4Water smart applications and devices for managing water in an integrated way, relying on sound Water Information Systems and efficient data management.
