Abstract:



To reduce potential flood risk and support national flood risk management, it is important to understand the regional-scale flood impact. With advances in numerical algorithms and high-performance computing, it is now possible to develop global/regional hydrodynamic models, which provide effective tools for quantifying flood impact. However, the application of regional-scale hydrodynamic models is severely constrained by limited availability and quality of data, such as the Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and river bathymetry. My research focus on using remote sensing (RS) techniques to address this challenge and thus improve the accuracy of flood modelling for flood impact analysis. As an example, the hydrodynamic model along with the newly generated datasets and the developed RS methods of flood disturbance detection are combined to investigate the impact of historical flood events on agricultural production in China.



Biography:



Dr Huili Chen is currently a Research Associate in Water Engineering in the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering at Loughborough University. Before joining Loughborough in January 2019, she was a Research Associate at Peking University. She received her BEng and MSc from Wuhan University, China in 2010 and 2012, and her PhD from Peking University in 2016.
