CALMARE works with a range of materials, including composites and polymers

CALMARE was established in 2013, following the success of Exeter Advanced Technologies (XAT) and the Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing (CALM). and funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the University of Exeter and industry partners. In its first two years it supported over 160 businesses in the South West of the UK on projects ranging from new product development to remanufacturing and the Circular Economy. Since that period it continues to support industry through both consulting work and funded research.

The centre has advised businesses throughout the region on a wide range of materials, but has a particular expertise in composite materials and plastics (thermosets and thermoplastics). At a time of growing environmental and legislative pressure, another key focus for the centre is the recycling and remanufacturing of waste materials.

Research projects include developing options for in-line spectroscopy for polythene recycling and the production of a new composite panel using recycled polymers. Consulting work ranges from short term materials and product testing to literature reviews and feasibility studies.
