Introduction from Professor Steve Eichhorn

I am pleased to be Chair of the Working Group within the Engineering and Camborne School of Mines (CSM) disciplines reflecting on our practices in relation to the Athena SWAN Charter. This important work is a key part of our discipline culture and our wish to be inclusive and supportive of all staff and students.

Whilst the “leaky pipeline” of women leaving (or not joining) Engineering is a global one the numbers of female students who consider studying Engineering is a concern for me.  Engineering continues to be a male dominated profession despite real prospects for women.  So how can we encourage more women into the engineering academic discipline and the industry?

Engineering is one of the most diverse areas to work in, as engineers find new ways of doing things and developing creative solutions to modern problems, ultimately creating a better lifestyle for us all.  But reports show that men continue to have all the fun and dominate the industry; figures from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) suggest that the number of women pursuing a career in engineering is in decline.

When girls don't think they are welcome in a subject such as engineering, it means that some of the most talented individuals are lost to this employment sector.  It is important to expand our talent pool, to consider all ideas and viewpoints.

Through the discipline's work with industry and other academic institutions we are looking at how we can attract more women into Engineering, through outreach work and industrial engagement – using our extended networks to identify role models and excellent practice. At the same time we are working hard to support those in the early stages of their career to remain and progress within academia.

The information on these webpages provides a flavour of the work we have done and continue to do across our campuses in Streatham and Penryn. We always welcome feedback and involvement from staff and students in relation to our work with the Athena SWAN Charter.
