Speed-accuracy trade-offs in decision-making are often remarked to be ubiquitous, exhibited by diverse organisms from unicellular slime mold through to groups of social insects. I will present a novel value-sensitive decision-making mechanism, based on observations of house-hunting honeybees, and survey its decision-making characteristics. I will speculate about its potential implementation in diverse decision-making systems from intracellular regulatory pathways to vertebrate brains, and discuss its application to collective robotics. More fundamentally, I will consider the question of whether natural selection should really shape decision systems to optimise the speed-accuracy trade-off.
