Exeter hosts joint Data Science workshop with Fudan

The University of Exeter and Fudan University have underpinned their long-standing relationship by co-hosting a special event.

Exeter’s Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence hosted the `Exeter-Fudan Collaboration Building Workshop in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence’, on its Streatham Campus, from May 20-21st.

The workshop was designed to provide an opportunity for researchers from both institutions to share their expertise, and to identify opportunities for future innovative research addressing data-related challenges associsted with healthcare, the environment and smart cities.

The workshop has laid the foundations for new international research collaborations between the two prestigious universities.

Professor Gavin Shaddick, Chair of Data Science and Statistics at the University of Exeter said: "This workshop was a fantastic opportunity for researchers from both institutions to come together and work on both the methodological and applied aspects of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

"There is a wealth of expertise in this area in both Fudan and Exeter, and the workshop allowed us to discuss the major challenges in this area, and ways in which we can work together to lead the development of methods and application in this rapidly developing field.”

From the summer of 2019, researchers will be able to take advantage of the Fudan-Exeter Fellowship Award that gives academics wide-ranging opportunities to develop their academic talents and enhance the research portfolio of the two institutions.

In addition to the workshop, the two Universities are developing a postgraduate exchange programme, designed to enable students from Fudan to join the training in AI and Data Science offered within the University of Exeter’s new Centre for Doctoral Training in Environmental Intelligence: Data Sciences and AI for Sustainable Futures

The centre, led by Professor Shaddick and a team of world-leading researchers, seeks to use pioneering research in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to help create a better understanding of the complex interactions between the environment, climate, natural ecosystems, human social and economic systems, and health.
