Introduction from Professor Mark Baldwin

I am very pleased that Mathematics and Computer Science have achieved the Athena SWAN Silver Award through our positive actions to date.  It reflects our full commitment to embedding Athena SWAN principles within the Department and to addressing gender inequality issues.

I support the work of the Athena SWAN initiative for several reasons. I firmly believe that policies that are good for both genders are something we should always aspire to. My subject (Mathematics) attracts a fairly even split of students at undergraduate level but in the UK it becomes progressively more male-dominated as one looks at the academic careers of mathematicians. We need to get to the bottom of why this is the case and take appropriate action - the Athena SWAN charter and the London Mathematical Society "Good Practice Award" are solid frameworks to support our work in this.
